Northwest Michigan, the region in which I live, is the cherry capital of the country, rivaled only by the state of Washington. More than 70% of the country’s tart cherries are grown here. Traverse City is known as the Cherry Capital of the World and hosts an annual National Cherry Festival. The local drive-in theatre is known as The Cherry Bowl. The airport is called Cherry Capital Airport. The baseball team is called the Pit Spitters. The wineries produce cherry varietals, as do the cideries, breweries and distilleries. Cherries are added to anything and everything. Ice cream, salsa, barbeque sauce, even sausage.

In mid-May our hillsides are pillowy with cherry blossoms and in winter, the red branches gleam against the snow. In July the trees are heavy with red berries.

So here’s my blog, The Cherry Bowl. Dip in now and then!
